Police officer wanted by FBI, Abba Kyari detains man for 11 months as Inspector General of Family Petitions Police
Suspended Police Deputy Commissioner Abba Kyari, while in charge of the Police Inspector General’s Intelligence Response Team, arrested and detained a man, Sunday Okoro, of Sapele, in the Delta State, since September 2020, following complaints of death threats.
SaharaReporters has learned that the suspect’s wife, Ms Rose Okoro, has now filed a petition with Federation Attorney General and Minister of Justice Abubakar Malami (SAN) and Inspector General of Police Usman Alkali Baba , concerning the “illegal detention” of her husband. for over 11 months.
In her petition, the housewife said her husband was arrested in Sapele on September 9, 2020 by besieged “super cop” DCP Abba Kyari and her Abuja IRT team, following complaints of threats from death uttered by a certain Sunny Nwankego.
The woman added that her 14-year-old son was also arrested, handcuffed with the father and paraded like common criminals while their phones were confiscated.
She alleged that her son had been detained for more than three weeks before being released.
Ms Okoro said their lawyer made multiple attempts and her husband was released on bail three times, but was reportedly frustrated by her prosecutor at Kyari’s alleged instructions.
The petition reads in part: “On Wednesday September 9, 2020, at around 6.30 am, my husband, Sunday Okoro, was illegally arrested at our home along with our 14 year old son, our caretaker, the DJ working in our hotel, my son’s son. husband’s sister, Precious and her cousin by men on the mufti who ransacked our private home and hotel without finding any compromising item.
“They were all taken to Benin and when I asked the question I was told that the police team was not from Benin but led by Abba Kyari before they were transferred to Abuja.
“They were denied bail for 2 weeks until we had a human rights activist, who came to our rescue but before that, the complainant, Sunny Nwakaego, who is not a police officer, dragged my husband to a school in Benin with the police team for torture every morning.
“The lawyer succeeded in securing the release of our son and the porter, but the DJ was not allowed to leave until we paid the sum of 600,000 naira, while my husband was still detained. , mistreated and kept in a slaughterhouse from September 9. to October 27, 2020 before being brought before the regional court of Mpape, which has no jurisdiction to hear a case of alleged threat to life.
“The regional court of Mpape declined its jurisdiction and my husband was remanded in custody at the Suleja correctional center without concrete evidence of the offense until May 19, 2021, when he was brought to justice for a case. threat to life and act of terrorism before the Federal High Court. Abuja.
“The judge granted him bail on health grounds for the illegal torture he suffered at the hands of the police for urgent medical treatment before he went blind, but the bail released him. was denied before the plaintiff brought a new charge in another Federal High Court for death threats. and act of terrorism again.
“The plaintiff and DSP Fasasi Abiodun asked the IRT prosecutor to file a murder complaint against my husband, but the prosecutor refused. Upon his refusal, DSP Abiodun and Abba Kyari took another FCT prosecutor who accepted and accused my husband of illegal possession of weapons, theft, threat to life, act of terrorism but still without evidence.
“Fortunately, bail was granted again, but DSP Abiodun who led the police team stopped the prison vehicle at the court gate and diverted my husband to an unknown destination.
“Meanwhile, the FCT prosecutor again filed another murder case in another court and the hearing took place on July 21, 2021 (Salah Day), but the same DSP Abiodun and the FCT prosecutor have took my husband to Mpepe Nasarawa prison. After keeping it for days, I took it to a district court on the same issue that is in the Federal High Court.
“We believe they were paid heavily to watch him and arrest him again as soon as he is released on bail, so we are calling for comprehensive justice for my husband, Mr. Sunday Okoro as this is totally illegal and all those involved should face the wrath of the law. “
The petition comes amid Kyari’s investigation into his links to Nigeria’s infamous suspected fraudster Ramon Olorunwa Abbas, aka Hushpuppi, who recently pleaded guilty in the United States.
Hushpuppi had recounted how he bribed Kyari according to court documents.
The United States Attorney’s Office, Central District of California, had issued an arrest warrant for Kyari for his alleged links to the alleged fraudster.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation had not yet been able to extradite Kyari to the United States.
