The Defense Logistics Agency is recruiting the military community to staff a civilian police force with six facilities in the United States.

An ongoing campaign on the American Forces Network encourages service members and their dependents to apply for the positions.

The agency is licensed to 377 police officers, responsible for securing and maintaining order at its bases, but must recruit regularly due to high turnover as employees move on to other opportunities in the police force. or government agencies, Tim Gerald, DLA Police Law Enforcement Officer. said in a phone interview this month.

“We have sites all over the United States,” he said of the agency, which operates huge warehouses and oversees the Department of Defense supply chain, supplying fighters with weapons, fuel, support materials, food and uniforms.

The facilities include the Defense Supply Center in Richmond, Virginia; Headquarters, Defense Logistics Agency at Fort Belvoir, Virginia; DLA Distribution in New Cumberland, Pennsylvania; the Defense Supply Center in Columbus, Ohio; and the defense distribution depot in San Joaquin, California.

Police at the bases spend around 60% of their time enforcing the law and 40% securing facilities. Crime on the bases is low and the job is to patrol residential areas, issue speeding tickets and control access points, Gerald said.

Police officer Ramon Contreras, who served in the Marine Corps and appears in a recruiting video for the DLA force, said he heard about the job while still on active duty.

The video shows a typical day for Contreras patrolling a daycare center in Fort Belvoir and “making sure the children are safe”.

Another Marine Corps veteran in the recruiting video, Joshua Foulkrod, completed two combat missions in Fallujah, Iraq, before becoming a police officer at the Richmond, Virginia Supply Center.

“It’s a great transition from the military, and it’s a great place to continue your service,” he said.

Civilian police work 12.5 hour shifts, 14 days a month.

Anything that happens outside of a base can happen inside, Foulkrod said.

“Since I’ve been here we’ve had suicides, we’ve had homicides, and we’ve had gang related activity,” he said.

Police jobs appeal to people who want to get a foot in the door of law enforcement and veterans who want to stay in touch with the military because the job is to interact with the military on a daily basis, Gerald said. .

It’s not a world far from serving in military police or security forces, but civilians never deploy and are not on guard at any time or subject to recall, he said.

The starting salary depends on the location and can range from $ 38,000 to $ 63,000. Recruits are to take a 12-week course at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Brunswick, Ga., And get more training at their facilities, Gerald said.

“We tend to promote from within, so there are career opportunities,” he said. “The DLA police force is a chance for people who separate from the military, who are used to service, to continue serving the fighter. “

Military personnel are well suited for jobs because they are disciplined and in good physical shape, Gerald said.

“If they were military police then they already have training and we can waive some of the requirements and just bring them in and undergo localized training and put them to work,” he said. “But you don’t have to be an MP to work for us.”
