A 26-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly impersonating a police officer and extorting money from roadside vendors in the city.

Police said a video was shared on social media on Sunday showing a man in police uniform extorting money from a roadside food vendor, consuming the items and refusing to pay the vendor. Following this, an investigation was launched and the video turned out to be from the police jurisdiction of Sector 39.

The suspect has been identified as Saurav, a native of Jalaun currently living in the village of Chhalera in Sector 44 of Noida.

“He would dress in a police uniform, pretend to be in the criminal branch, then extort benefits from local vendors or attempt to intimidate them by pretending to be a policeman,” said Kumar Ranvijay Singh, Additional Deputy Police Commissioner, Zone 1 .

Saurav has been extorting money in this way in recent months, police said, adding that he was arrested in Chhalera. A set of khaki uniforms, two fake UP police badges and a motorcycle were recovered from him.

The suspect was arrested on charges of cheating and identity theft under relevant articles of the Indian Penal Code at Sector 39 police station.

“The plaintiff and DSP Fasasi Abiodun asked the IRT prosecutor to file a murder complaint against my husband, but the prosecutor refused. Upon his refusal, DSP Abiodun and Abba Kyari took another FCT prosecutor who accepted and accused my husband of illegal possession of weapons, theft, threat to life, act of terrorism but still without evidence.

“Fortunately, bail was granted again, but DSP Abiodun who led the police team stopped the prison vehicle at the court gate and diverted my husband to an unknown destination.

“Meanwhile, the FCT prosecutor again filed another murder case in another court and the hearing took place on July 21, 2021 (Salah Day), but the same DSP Abiodun and the FCT prosecutor have took my husband to Mpepe Nasarawa prison. The petition comes amid Kyari’s investigation into his links to Nigeria’s infamous suspected fraudster Ramon Olorunwa Abbas, aka Hushpuppi, who recently pleaded guilty in the United States.

Hushpuppi had recounted how he bribed Kyari according to court documents.

The United States Attorney’s Office, Central District of California, had issued an arrest warrant for Kyari for his alleged links to the alleged fraudster.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation had not yet been able to extradite Kyari to the United States.
